Part-Time Internship
About New York County Defender Services: NYCDS is a trial-level public defender office located in lower Manhattan. Since 1997, we have represented more than 200,000 New Yorkers accused of crimes in Manhattan’s Criminal and Supreme Courts. Our team provides superior legal advocacy and social work support for our clients while promoting systemic reforms to the criminal legal system.
Job Overview:
- Part-time internship (10-15 hours/week) beginning in January 2025.
- Work with New York County Defender Services’ Policy & Community Engagement Unit to serve as a liaison between our office and the communities we serve in New York City, especially Manhattan.
Job responsibilities:
- Conduct community outreach.
- Attend rallies, community events, hearings, community board meetings and precinct meetings across New York City, in-person or virtually.
- Conduct research on criminal legal system reform issues.
- Support NYCDS community events, including making fliers, checking-in attendees, etc.
Qualifications and Skills of Ideal Candidate:
Required:
- Work 10-15 hours per week, including at least one day per week in the office or in the community.
- Enrolled as a full-time or part-time college student (community college, undergraduate or other adult students encouraged to apply).
Preferred:
- Personal, family, or community experience with the criminal legal system; or
- Interest in eradicating racism and racial inequity;
Compensation:
- Hourly wage - $25/hr
